Chanson du jour

It took me a long time to figure out what song to put up for today. I was listening to Sufjan Stevens all day but I wanted to use a different artist.

So I decided to go with my favorite, which is Death Cab for Cutie. Today's song is 'Cath...' from 'Narrow Stairs'. They played this song at their concert this summer and it was AMAZING. Anyway, they released a new EP today called The Open Door EP. It's a bit of an extension of 'Narrow Stairs'.

I've chosen Cath... because this song is kind of about everything I'm afraid of in life. These are my favorite lines:

Cath...
She stands with a well intentioned man
But she can't relax with his hands on the small of her back

From the Mac Lab

I'm writing to you today from the Mac Lab on the 2nd floor of MC. I'm in Waterloo for a 'Meet and Greet' for 2009/2010 Dons. It was fun, I met about 100 people but I don't think that I'll remember any of their names.

I'm really looking forward to being a Don (is Don a word that is consistently capitolized? I'm not sure, I'll investigate this). I'm looking forward to making a lot of friends and living with a lot of people and helping the students out. I don't think it will be as rewarding as it would be if I were donning for first-years, but it will be what I make of it.

Anyway, more about the Mac Labs. They have the sexiest computers here. I really want to steal one. I could possibly get kicked out of school for that though...so I'll just save up and buy my own. I especially like the keyboards. The keys type so nicely. I think I could even get used to pressing apple + c instead of ctrl + c to copy.

Now, for the song of the day. I think I'll go with City and Colour, since Dallas Green was on the Junos last night. The song is 'Against the Grain' from 'Bring Me Your Love', which is Dallas Green's second solo album. I'm not sure which lines are my favorite, but I'll go with:

You need not, to find a cure
For everything that makes you weak.

It's a slow and sad-sounding song, but it's actually uplifting. I might even go so far as to say inspirational. For those of you who missed the Junos last night, Dallas Green was dressed up like a nerd. He had a plaid bow-tie and big nerdy glasses. He makes nerds look good.

Dallas Green is probably one of the saddest singers I know. All of his songs are so sad and emo, but at least from his desperation he pulls beautiful songs.

I never learn my lesson

So I think that my favorite food are those little caramel candies. I know they're not really a food, but there's nothing better than those little chewy candies.

Thing is though, they always make my teeth hurt when I eat them. I don't know if its because they're really chewing and get stick to my teeth, but every time I eat one my teeth hurt for a few minutes after.

But they're just so good that I can't help myself. After the pain of the last candy subsides, I wonder if I can have another one. I think 'this time it won't hurt' and I eat another candy. But as soon as I bite down, it hurts my teeth again. Eventually the pain subsides and I forget about it and want another candy. And so I just keep going back for more, and every time it hurts my teeth.

Are you writing from the heart?

So today's song is 'Come On! Feel the Illinois!: The World's Columbian Exposition/Carl San' by Sufjan Stevens. It's from his Illinois album. Back in 2004 he started 'The Fifty States' project, where he intends to write an album for every state. He started with Michigan, then moved on to Illinois. So far he's only done two, but they're both great.

Anyway, I decided to use this song for today because the title of my blog is from that song. My favorite lines from this song are:

Even in his heart the devil has to know the water level
Are you writing from the heart?

I feel that those two lines don't really fit together, but somehow it flows really nicely in the song. They both have totally different meanings to me.

New Blog

So I'm starting a public blog.

I'm thinking it's a good idea because it will help me keep in touch with my friends. School and coop put a strain on friendships and relationship at Waterloo, so helpfully this will help =).

One thing I want to do with this blog is post a song a day. I won't put the lyrics, but I'll put my favorite line from it and why it's awesome. I'll keep this up at least until school starts, but after that it will probably change to once a week.

I wonder if people can post comments on this if they don't have a Google account. I'm not really good at this blogging business. You'd think as a CS kid I'd at least know how to work a blog...
